With the new year upon us, I thought I’d shake things up a little in here by doing a post on the best and worst of Beauty this year thus far. The topic of this post is: Blue Lipstick, where have we gone wrong?! If there was an award for worst look of of the year, I’d put all my money on the blue/grey blue lipstick.
The blue lipstick, especially blue-grey as seen on Chanel Iman, does nothing for anyone’s skin tone. It makes the skin look sallow and a little dull. I’m still baffled as to why so many hipsters and fashionistas sported this shade.
What did you think of this trend?

Ladies, it seems like bright lips are here to stay (for now). Be it bright red, orange, or fuchsia, bright lips are the ultimate in statement makeup. Besides, what better way to celebrate spring than with bright lips?
For red, I LOVE MAC’s Russian Red — it is, however, extremely matte, so well moisturized lips are a must! If you prefer orange, MAC’s Morange is a gorgeous, bright, in your face orange which is great for many skin tones. Nars’ Funny Face or Yves St. Laurent’s 019 Fuchsia Pink are both great.
When wearing bright lipstick, try to keep the rest of your makeup minimal so that your features are not overwhelmed. Also, use a lip pencil closest to the shade of your lipstick for a perfect outline — hey, we’re not attempting to look like this!

The past 12 or so months have been really good to vampires what with the huge success of Twilight, True Blood, and now Vampire Diaries. What can I say, we are a vampire crazed lot! So, I guess it’s no coincidence that runways were abound with models wearing black on their lids and… lips?
MAC and Chanel, ever the trailblazers, recently released makeup collections centered on this dark trend: Style Black and Noirs Obscurs, respectively. Think dark browns, black reds, deep plums — cutting edge, no? However, while I’m a huge fan of black on the lids, I’m a bit apprehensive on wearing black lipstick. Well, unless I’m out for halloween, but I don’t even dress up for halloween!
Some tips:
- If you love the idea of dark hues on your lips, you may want to go with wine red lipstick or dark fuschia a-la Rihanna.
- Try to avoid having too much going on. Dark, heavy makeup paired with dark lips can look a little too busy. Instead, choose only one as your focal point — if your eyes are dark, then opt for a nude lipstick and if your lips are dark then ease up on the eye makeup or leave it out completely if possible.
- Healthy, glowy skin is always in and looks great with makeup, so make sure your skin is well hydrated especially since winter is almost upon us.
- Never, ever wear anything you’re not comfortable with. Makeup should be fun, not awkward.
Happy Fall!
