Salon Etiquette: How to Tip your Stylist

Ladies, many of you may have had a similar experience I had a couple of months ago: bad horrible hair cut; how much tip should I leave?

The 411:

When it comes to tipping at the salon, 15% seems to be the standard. If the service was extraordinary and you’re head-over-heels in love with your cut, then, ideally, you should leave at least a 20% tip with your stylist and leave $5 (or equivalent) with the person who washed your hair (if different from your main stylist).

How to Deal

If you find yourself in a mini dilemma like I did (bad hair cut), then make your decision based on how they handled your complaint. Did they listen to you and try to rectify the issue? Were they attentive and understanding or were they dismissive and abrupt? Any stylist worth their salt will try to solve the problem on the spot or schedule a follow up appointment with you. It is understandable not to be so generous with your tip if your experience was bad, but if you decide to leave a meagre tip then make sure it’s at a salon you won’t be revisiting in the immediate future. Why? Well, for one, I’m afraid they’ll remember my face and foil another hair cut and I’ve got my pride (so sue me :P ).

I like your style of writing. I find that it’s easy to understand. Anyhow, good article!
