in Makeup

  1. How old were you when you started wearing makeup?

I became really curious about makeup, especially lipstick, when I was around 8 or 9 years old, but my parents were quite strict about makeup so was not until my last year of grade school that I started to wear clear and tinted lip gloss from Bonne Bell.

  2. How did you get into makeup?

My friend, V, gave me tips on how to do the smokey eye look in high school and I guess it started there. That was around the time when I got my first “real” makeup product — something from M.A.C.

  3. What are some of your favorite brands?

Oh, tough question! I don’t really have any favourites, but I love stuff from Revlon, Maybelline, Benefit, M.A.C, Lorac, Bobbi Brown, Almay, Wet N’ Wild, and Nars.

  4. What does makeup mean to you?

Haha I’m gonna sound totally shallow, but makeup is not about self-expression to me. It’s about not having to torture other with my effed up brows and not scaring them into thinking I’m a zombie after a late night out. You know, faking 8 hours of sleep, full brows, and flushed cheeks.

  5. If you could only wear 4 products on your face what would they be?

I really only wear 4 makeup products max daily:

    • Benefit Brow Zings
    • Bobbi Brown Concealer
    • Wet N’ Wild Idol Eyes in Dark Brown (great stuff!)
    • Clinique Mascara
  6. What is your favorite thing about makeup?

That it makes me look “alive” and not part of the living dead. Sorry, I’m currently obsessed with The Walking Dead Haha!

  7. . What do you think about drugstore makeup vs high end makeup?

Be a discerning consumer. A higher price tag does not necessarily mean better product. There are tons of cheap drugstore makeup brands with great quality. Mascara, for example should be replenished every 3-4 months and sticking to a high end brand is not practical for most of us so I’d suggest trying out brands like Revlon, Almay, Maybelline, etc. Foundation is harder to match to your skin tone due to lack of testers at the drugstore so getting higher end brands may be the way to go.

  8. What is one tip of advice you can give to a beginner?

    Less is more.

  9. What is one makeup trend you never understood?

Black lipstick, blue lipstick, purple lipstick, silver lipstick, etc.

  10. What do you think about the beauty community on YouTube?

I have my favourites, but I haven’t watched a single video for about a year now to avoid splurging on unnecessary makeup items. But I do think that it offers great resources on proper makeup application and skin care tips.

You hit the nail with the whole trying to fit in. I was the exact same way in high school… I did whatever look everyone else liked except for my own… Guess it just comes with getting older and maturity — you know, the being yourself is enough thing.

I remember the whole black lipstick in grade school, too.. except they were so gross back then. I think only brands like Wet n’ Wild (before they stepped up their lipstick game) and some other that I can’t remember at the moment carried it and it just felt SO wrong on the lips. Was it the texture or the smell? Yechh.
