The past 12 or so months have been really good to vampires what with the huge success of Twilight, True Blood, and now Vampire Diaries. What can I say, we are a vampire crazed lot! So, I guess it’s no coincidence that runways were abound with models wearing black on their lids and… lips?

MAC and Chanel, ever the trailblazers, recently released makeup collections centered on this dark trend: Style Black and Noirs Obscurs, respectively.  Think dark browns, black reds, deep plums — cutting edge, no?   However, while I’m a huge fan of black on the lids, I’m a bit apprehensive on wearing black lipstick. Well, unless I’m out for halloween, but I don’t even dress up for halloween!

Some tips:

  • If you love the idea of dark hues on your lips, you may want to go with wine red lipstick or dark fuschia a-la Rihanna.
  • Try to avoid having too much going on. Dark, heavy makeup paired with dark lips can look a little too busy. Instead, choose only one as your focal point — if your eyes are dark, then opt for a nude lipstick and if your lips are dark then ease up on the eye makeup or leave it out completely if possible.
  • Healthy, glowy skin is always in and looks great with makeup, so make sure your skin is well hydrated especially since winter is almost upon us.
  • Never, ever wear anything you’re not comfortable with. Makeup should be fun, not awkward.

Happy Fall!

  1. I love the trend of black eye makeup (even smoky eye) and nude lips. I’m not sure I would look my best with black lipstick cause I have such a white skin, but I’ve seen girls that look gorgeous. I guess I will stick with black only on my eye makeup and nails :)

  2. Hi Tavia,

I love anything dark on the eyes (my fave is dark blue), but you’re right… I’m not sure about black lipstick… I feel like I’m awkward enough without the black lips hahaha.
And I also love dark nails!!! Have you seen OPI’s suede line? TO DIE FOR. I also love their Espana line… oh no, now I feel like shopping :S
