Would You Like a Side of Fries with That?

It should come as no surprise to some of you that I. LOVE. FOOD. It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up and my last thought before I doze off at night. I just LOVE it.
So, this A Few Favourites post is dedicated to: *cue angels singing* food.

Pumpkin Protein Cakes
I snack on these day in an day out. It’s made of oat flour, almond flour, pumpkin, and protein powder and is only 47 calories per serving.

South St. Burger Veggie Burger
South St. Burger’s veggie burger with goat cheese is pretty damn good. I’ve had plenty other veggie burgers in the past, but this definitely blows all the others out of the water. Even my bf who scoffs at the idea of a meatless burger really liked it.

Soba with Sautéed Spinach and Mushrooms.
Fast and super simple to make.

Blackened Tilapia with Sautéed Vegetables, Baked Sweet Potato and Avocado.
I have a general rule when it comes to cooking (since I can’t cook if my life depended on it): just grab shit and throw it in the pan/toaster/oven. This dish pretty much follows that principle. I just grab whatever fish, coat it with whatever spice I see (it was a jerk spice mix in this case) and throw it in the pan to sear for a few minutes on each side. Next, I’ll throw some vegetables in the pan, add a bit of seasoning (Hoi Sin, Oyster Sauce, heck, even Coconut Milk — because, seriously I just throw in whatever I see), and sautée for a few minutes.
And, guys, you have to try avocado and baked sweet potato TOGETHER. It’s like a freaking party in my mouth!

Breakfast
This is my typical breakfast if I’m planning on working out in the morning: A huge ass mug of black coffee (because, honestly, you don’t want to deal with me in the morning before my caffeine fix), Chocolate Banana Smoothie (half a frozen banana, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, and half a scoop of Progressive all natural chocolate protein), some type of sautéed vegetable, and 1/2 cup each of baked sweet potato and fruit. It’s a lot, but you need the calories and carbs to have a good workout!

BBQ Combo at Yummy BBQ
So good!!! I think this dish goes for around $9-$10, if I’m not mistaken which is a pretty darn good deal because it comes two types of barbequed meat (I love extra spicy chicken and bulgogi) and the typical Korean side dishes (banchan). I’m sure I’ve had this at least a thousand times throughout my years in university.

Ontario Prosciutto & Arugula Pizza
Thin crust pizza with garlic, tomato, oregano, and shaved Grana Padano. So. Damn. Good.

Buttermilk Calamari (also Pizzeria Libretto)
Deep fried buttermilk coated calamari might just be my favourite type of deep fried calamari. It was golden brown and perfectly crispy. Oh God, I’m starting to drool.

Funnel Cake
My bf and I LOVE funnel cake and usually only get it when we go to Wonderland which kind of sucks because it’s only open from May to October. That leaves 6 sad and lonely months without funnel cake. But thanks to my friend Kate (you rock!), we now have the option of indulging in some artery clogging, insulin spiking deep fried cake batter in the dead of winter. #winning.

You’re not a fan of soba, I guess? I have to admit that it’s pretty bland tasting, but I just cannot get enough of it.

And, yes, right?? Buttermilk and calamari together… Whudda thunk it?! It was sooooo good!

Hahaha sorry!

And they were all great, thank you! Actually, that’s a decently sized funnel cakes. THe ones we usually get at the amusement park are much more ginormous!

You can totally cook! What are you talking about!?
The dishes you made look delicious and as you said “It’s like a freaking party in my mouth!”

This post is totally making me hungry. :)

Aww well, thanks, Janetta!

I love how adventurous you are when it comes to cooking. Like, I’d love to be able to make Moroccan (was it Moroccan?) lamb sometime!

And have you tried avocado and sweet potato together before?? Oh GOD, it’s my current obsession.

And your blog ALWAYS makes me hungry :-P

I’ve never had sweet potates and avocado before!
Do you suggest taking a scoop of tater and then a chunk of avocado? Or like..mashing them together a little bit? Salt? lol I want to know how you eat it!

lol I’m glad it makes you hungry, because then I know I’m not the only one who ends up wanting to eat the computer screen (usually at unforgiving hours like 4 in the morning). :D

I haven’t tried mashing them together a bit. I usually just take a bite of the sweet potato and then one of the avocado. Nothing extra. However, I do like the red skinned sweet potato better. You know which one, right? The regular sweet potato (the one with the orange flesh) is a little bit more sweet than I like. Plus, the red skinned sweet potato has a starchier texture — it’s a lot more sticky. I just bake it in the oven at 350 for approx. 40-45 minutes (depending on the size of the potato) with the skin on (I don’t bother with foil or anything). After that’s done, I just slice up some avocado to eat it with and… PARRRTAYYY!! lol

And you make some damn good looking food. Have you ever thought about going into culinary arts? Your dishes always look restaurant material.

LOL, that is MUCH MORE COOKING SKILL that I have. ;)

You know, I was getting worried that you were becoming vegetarian after the first three pictures. DON’T SCARE ME LIKE THAT.

Also… when are we going to get some funnel cakes? :D

Hahahah! You know what? I kind of believe you!!

And I don’t think I can go vegetarian. Tried to and failed after a week or two.. :-S.

When we meet up??

Oh man, May’s a pretty hectic month for me. I’m free most Fridays in June except the 15th and 22nd since I’m going to be in Boston for a relative’s wedding… What’s your schedule like?

DeniseNo Gravatar May 10, 2012 at 2:35 am

I only have my May schedule right now, and probably won’t have my June schedule until like, the last week of May. :P Hopefully we can meet for Summerlicious…

MaryNo Gravatar May 14, 2012 at 1:08 am

And I’ve been good as well! Been very busy, so the blog has kind of fallen to wayside :-( .

Happy Birthday to your baby, by the way! Can’t believe you’ve been blogging for years now!

I want funnel cakes! I used to have a very nice Canadian flatmate back in university who once made some for us. They were delicious. Do you think they are similar to Churros? We have a street vendor for Churros here but only once or twice a year when there’s some kind of food market thingie going on.

You can definitely cook. Soba noodles are not easy to make neither is that blackened fish that is calling my name. Give yourself some credit :) You’re actually baking too! *HUG*

Hmm… I don’t think they are quite similar to Churros. I’ve only ever had churros once and from what I remember, the flavour is a little different.. I think? And if you EVER visit me and Denise, we’d totally take you to this place so you can indulge in some funnel cake ’til you burst. WEll, okay, not burst-burst, but ‘ya know what I mean! ;-)

I think Soba’s quite easy! You take a bundle of store bought soba, boil, then immerse in cold water, then drain and serve with store bought soba noodle sauce. LOL!!! See?!?!

And the blackened fish? Just coat your fish with any spice. Heck, even good ‘ol ground pepper will do. As for baking? I’m still kind of like a chicken with its head cut off; I keep poking the cake every 5 minutes or so to make sure I don’t overbake it. ***HUGGZIEZZZZ***

Hmm, okay not the same as churros.

My soba is always a bit sticky. Yours looks perfect :) Ohh blackened fish. I shall try it out. I usually bake salmon with lemon juice and black pepper or sometimes i’m naughty and use Teriyaki marinade.

If you keep baking, you’ll be fine :)

Do you leave it in the strainer for long?? I like to constantly stir the noodles while they’re boiling. I take the noodles out as soon as they’re done and place it in a bowl of water with ice to stop the cooking process and leave it there for a good 2-3 minute or until they’re chilled just enough.
